Individual sessions are for you if you…

A one to one session provides you with the chance to have a look safely at what is really going on in your life.

The creative process allows you to explore your experiences and reflects information that will assist you to breakthrough challenges and create the life that you want.

Why Art Therapy?

You know that feeling of not being able to articulate exactly what is going on, you know that you are experiencing something, feel lost, stressed anxious, need to make a decision or are wanting more out of life but not really sure how to make sense of it and it’s really hard to put your finger on what is happening.

The great thing about this type of reflection is that you are not limited by words alone. The shapes, lines, colours, textures of your creations are another way to speak about what is going on. It helps you talk about the things that are hard to find words for and it can be heaps easier to talk about the art rather than what is happening for you.

The art is a safe place to hold your experiences – the art can take anything –  even the big stuff that no one else understands, the things that you don’t want to burden others with or those crazy dreams or ambitions that you are too embarrassed to admit.

The hands on approach allows you to be curious, play, wonder, experiment and discover what is happening from different perspectives. It’s a space to see what is being reflected from the art and taking steps to express, release, let go, adapt and discover how the creative process relates to your lived experience.

Each 1:1 session is adapted specifically to your needs.

This isn’t a generic framework or worksheet that you need to fit into (hello round peg, square hole!) – the art therapy experience is all about looking at where you are at, how you experience life and what needs to happen in order to move through issues, increase confidence, have better relationships and connect to yourself and your purpose.

Ultimately the art helps you gain insight, find clarity, express what’s going on, assists you connect and take steps toward the possibilities.

What happens in an art therapy session?

It’s really hard to just jot down what actually happens in a session, as each individual session is personally tailored according to what you want to get out of the session.

The first thing is to establish what you want to focus on for the session*. We chat for a while with you and decide what you are hoping to get from our time together.

Your intention for the session determines what medium** is used and how the session is navigated from there.

Your therapist will direct you to create something*** based on what is happening in your life and what you want to get out of the session.

Once the art is created we have a look at what is reflected back to you in the ‘image’****and look at some of the things that you see and how that relates to what is happening in your life.

The next stage can go in lots of different directions*****, its all depends upon what you want to do with the art and what will help you with your lived experience. Generally there is some sort of change that occurs in the art that then gives clarity to what the next steps will be in your life.

In our time together and every step of the way you are expressing, getting insight, looking with curiosity and processing how your creation relates to what is taking place in your life. At the end of the session we will have a chat about what will you take away from the exploration and if there is anything else that needs to be explored in future sessions.

Individual sessions run for approximately 60-90minutes and the same theme can be worked on for numerous sessions or the goal can change each time..

*Maybe you are stuck with something. overwhelmed with everything going on, have no time for you, there has been a big life event, you might be needing to make a decision, transitioning to something new, want to dream about life being different or plan for the future.

**The mediums that are used can be anywhere from using oil pastels, drawing, painting, movement, soft pastels, construction, clay, plasticine, sandplay, watercolours, collage, marbelling, markers, pencils, music, kinetic sand, charcoal, pictures, natural stuff… the list goes on.

***You also don’t have to be too concerned about being an artist – its the doing and expressing while you are creating that’s important not what it looks like.

****It is important to note that the therapist doesn’t know what your work means for you, our job is to help you to unpack the meaning it has for you and what you want to do from there.

*****It can be looking at your art from different angles, smudging, burning, rubbing, cutting, pulping, ripping, adding, taking away, transforming, gluing, connecting, weaving, manipulating, unravelling, moving, securing, moulding, rinsing, or doing anything else to the art before coming to some sort of conclusion for the session.
