Last night I got a shock at 11.30pm with a loud knock on my door. I was up late finalising a speaking proposal and was a little scared to open the door.
I tentatively opened the door to see my brother standing there – he was checking in to see if I was alive, which was a surprise to me as I was just doing my thing and absorbed in creating an awesome keynote.
He was responding to my Mum being worried (thanks Mum) and while a series of events (and me having my silenced phone on the other side of the room so I didn’t get distracted) lead to some conclusions that had my brother on my door step late at night – this highlighted that its better to check in and have the wrong end of the stick than not checking at all.
And yes while it’s not ideal to have to go to someone’s house late at night unnecessarily, I do appreciate it as it could have been a different story.
Here’s to not having all the facts, taking action on a gut feeling and checking in to see if someone is okay. The consequences of not doing so can be so much more than a little inconvenience and reassuring your elderly mother.
And in typical sibling style as he walked away he said – “well I guess it’s good to know that you are upright!” Yep, thanks for that.
