You know how you aren’t really meant to have favourites? Well, I can’t help it especially as this is soooo good.
When I use mediums to help people inquire into their world we chose different things for different reasons. For instance if someone was feeling out of control we might chose something that replicates with that experience (hello flowy inks, paints) or something that is the opposite (permanent makers).
This is how the creative materials can help inform, mirror and have symbolism play out just by the way you interact with it.
I just received the pics from an interactive talk I did recently at the WoTL conference, and I was reminded of how much I love plasticine (how good are these pics!)
It rates as one of my favourites because it is sticky, hard to move, messy and you need to work at it – bit like a lot of life really.
It can be colourful or dark, and also get unwanted bits in it!
You can keep it one colour or mix it all together
It can be flat or smudged and moves into different shapes, heights, twists and turns
It requires patience and softens the more you move it though your hands
You can hide things in the different layers
You are interacting with the creation with a lot of movement and its 3D
When you look at it from different angles (including birdseye) you see different things
The list goes on.
And the thing I love most is that you can go from a still structure and gradually shift it, mix it up, reveal the inside, add, take out, animate it, roll it out and break it apart.
The process of unsticking it and doing what needs to be done informs, moves and puts something into action whether its obvious or not.
The changing of the art is the important moment in the exploration, even if you don’t do anything – that in itself has some insight.
Thanks to WoTL delegates for jumping in, creating and looking at what you are stuck with. It is incredible to share this work with so many, it was a wonderful couple of days and it made my heart very full when I saw the feedback.
