This made a difference

I unexpectedly got a phone call from the big boss of an organisation and I am not going to lie I was a little worried for a moment.

I have been advising and supporting a team leader, HR and their managers with a vulnerable mental health experience and they called to say thank you and ask if there was anything that they could do to help further.

Sometimes you just do what you do and appreciate the opportunity to share your expertise, to listen, explore fears, and have a little input to support a team that have been incredible in circumstances that are difficult to navigate. But taking the time to reach out with these simple words meant a lot.

It got me thinking about how it’s not always the big accolades or public acknowledgements that make a difference – the action of checking in, saying thank you, a bit of encouragement, a well done or a ‘I noticed…” goes a long way for team members feeling valued.

Do not underestimate the power of your words and actions even if it feels like nothing or they are just doing their job – it goes a long way to having an engaged team rather than having to engage me to deal with fractures, gossip, poor behaviour and toxicity.

Is there someone that you want to thank?
