Share the hidden treasure

treasure sharedA very rare thing happened over the weekend and I couldn’t be happier about it.

While this might seem like an everyday thing with other professionals, it’s something that I am so grateful for. I attended an art therapy conference here in Adelaide and I truly underestimated the impact it would have on me.

You know that feeling where you feel complexly at ease, that you are in the right place and that your souls purpose is aligning everything you have experienced to this point in time. That’s what it was like. To sit in a room with 170 other who ‘get it’ is nothing short of amazing.

It is refreshing to share ideas, stories, experiences and passion for arts therapy.

It is easy to think that we are competition to one another and that we need to keep everything to ourselves. This happens a lot in life and all it does is bring up insecurity, secretiveness and a protectiveness which then closes our eyes to the gifts that could be shared.

If this happens, it is important to reflect on what is happening for us – why are behaving in such a way and what is happening for us in the process. From my experience, it’s usually because we are sitting in fear and our protectiveness or defensiveness dictates our behaviour and we are projecting something that could benefit from a bit of exploration.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s not about giving away all your business ideas for someone else to use but it is about opening our eyes to the opportunity to learn from one another and realise that there is benefit in support instead of sitting alone.

In the case of arts therapy it is useful to develop a voice together so that we can share the brilliance of what we do with the world instead of it being the hidden treasure that no-one knows about. As that would be the biggest shame of all.

Its not about how long you have been doing it, what modality is superior or where you did your training – it is about being united professionals that have an incredible ability to walk with people to express life in the most healing, authentic, connected way. And that’s exactly what happened for me this weekend.

Thank you to everyone that shared the space, themselves and the wonderful gifts of knowledge, companionship and passion for arts therapy. We do work in the most profound ways and I can’t wait to see how we hold hands and continue to share what we do with the world.

Til we meet again, take care
