My dad died when I was twelve.
I don’t remember much about him but even after all this time, I can experience moments of deep sadness and at other times I find myself experiencing profound joy and connection to him, often in everyday, mundane moments of human-ing.
Last weekend, on my way to a work event in Pinnaroo, I drove over the rather uncreatively named Murray Bridge – an expanse of metal that spans the river of the same name Murray, located (again rather uncreatively) in the town that also shares the name Murray.
I was instantly filled with joy at the memory of my dad not only telling us the bridge had been named after him but us believing him!
My nephew also shares my dad’s name. Hearing him read his full name out during his wedding vows a few weeks ago brought me such an incredible feeling of happiness knowing that my dad is still a presence and an influence in our lives (even if the bridge wasn’t really named after him).
Those unexpected moments where we remember a person or a place with love and joy seem all the sweeter don’t they?
I would love to hear about those moments that remind you of someone and remembering with joy.
May your week be filled with moments of connection and everyday human-ing that make you smile.
