Bandanna Day – Close to my Heart

Oct 27, 2025 | Blog

For me, Bandanna day (this coming Thursday) is a day I find myself stopping and reflecting on my career and time as a volunteer with CanTeen and especially how those experiences (together with my lived experience) have shaped my life.

Though my days working with young people and as a therapist are in the rear-view mirror, the lessons I learned from my time at CanTeen are very much in front of me; in shaping the direction of my business, how I approach my workshops, and the things I’m passionate about.

How have your experiences shaped you?

I often think about one of my CanTeen clients, Alex (no that’s not their real name). Alex’s experiences closely aligned with my own (if you haven’t heard my back story, check out the keynote ‘Bel’s Big Purpose’) but  Alex was also the kind of person you’re drawn to: authentic in their individuality, funny, cool, popular, engaging, helpful.

One day, during a conversation with Alex’s mum, she told me how much Alex valued our conversations. Except in our time together, Alex rarely talked. Instead, they would sit on the couch and sob and sob for an hour or share memories and experiences that were hard for others to hear as they found it hard to see Alex like this.

I would sit with them without saying a word. In that moment, it wasn’t about me and what I’d experienced. It wasn’t about imparting knowledge, strategies, or tools. It wasn’t about what Alex had to say; it was about who Alex was, what they were experiencing and needed in that moment.

To this day, those experiences inform why I provide a safe space for people to share what’s really happening in their world. My passion for giving people the opportunity to be real about the full spectrum of life, not just the public persona. My commitment to removing the pressure to play a role or be anything other than who they are.

Just like Alex, we all need a space to be with what we’re experiencing, to celebrate, be frustrated, cry, laugh, and most importantly, not hold back for fear of upsetting someone  or bending to agendas and workplace politics.

Where is that space for you << Test First Name >>?

Let me know if there is anything that I can support you with, especially if you need to sit on the couch and share what is really happening for you.

Here’s to a week of taking care of you,

Bel
